Green IT

Our IT must become more sustainable:

"ICT causes about 2-3% of carbon dioxide emissions worldwide, a quantity that even exceeds the emissions of the entire aviation industry (BMU/UBA/BITKOM Annual Conference 2010)     According to a Fraunhofer study commissioned by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi), ICT accounted for 10.5% of total German electricity consumption in 2007. According to the Federal Environment Agency (UBA), this caused 33 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. An increase in electricity consumption of 20% is predicted by 2020.     Worldwide, the PC market continues to develop rapidly with an annual growth rate of almost 12% (IT market research and consulting firm Gartner). Especially due to the steady increase in ICT infrastructures, i.e. servers and data centers, and the resulting need for cooling, power consumption and thus the environmental impact remain at a high level.

Green IT is an important issue for the success of a company: due to rising raw material and energy prices, production costs and product prices are rising, which impairs competitiveness. The use of energy- and resource-saving ICT structures therefore makes a decisive contribution to economic growth and job security".
